President Barack H. Obama to Deliver Historic Speech to U.S. School Children Monday, September 7, 2009 Brother neely,
As I serve as your advocate on the International Board of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., it is my duty to keep you knowledgeable of upcoming events that involve education on multiple levels. Yesterday afternoon I had the distinct pleasure of participating in a national conference call with President Barack Obama's White House Staff in conjunction with other national organizations. This Education Alert is to brief you on the President's upcoming historic speech to school children throughout the country, here are the key facts: This morning, September 7, 2009, President Obama is delivering a Historic speech. The speech will be aired on CSPAN, will last 15 to 20 min and is intended for Middle and High Schools. The goal of the speech is to challenge students to work hard, stay in school and dramatically reduce the dropout rate. This isn't a policy speech. It's a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school. Lesson Plans and teacher resources have been provided to schools for implementation but are not mandatory. School districts, administrators and teachers have the right to decide whether to show the speech. The President's Cabinet will be at school locations throughout the country participating with students. Private, Parochial and Public Schools all have be invited to participate. Text for this Historic Speech will be available later today, Monday, September 7, 2009 on www.WhiteHouse.gov for review. In Conclusion, I will continue to participate and when necessary demand a seat at the table when discussions on education evolve. I take seriously my oath of commitment to the fraternity and will not falter in my efforts to bring you quality information as it relates to education. In Sigma, William L. Powell, Jr. International Director of Education Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
